Beers to look out for:

Anchor Steam, Anchor Brotherhood Steam.

Brooklyn Lager is an example of a runaway beer success and is now the main Vienna-style lager on the shelves, although Brooklyn like to say it is ‘pre-Prohibition’ style. Imagine drinking toasted lager: that’s Vienna style.

What you need to know:

A clean and dry lager with a decidedly toasty flavour, without verging into roasty territory. It has a distinct caramel character but without any sweetness.

The essential difference between Vienna Lager and pale lager is the use of Vienna malt. This malt will impart the characteristic amber hue to the beer, but will also provide a lightly toasted flavour. The enzymes in Vienna malt survive the kilning process sufficiently to give it enough diastatic power (the ability to convert the starch into sugar) to be used as the entirety of the grist, without the support of any other malts, giving it a singular and unique flavour.

Brooklyn have grown so globally successful that their lager surpasses being simply an example of the style and has now run away with and superseded the style to the point that they actually use Munich rather than Vienna malt, although to the same flavour effect.
